If you don't mind smallish rooms, you'll find no better place to be pampered than the lavish Grand Palace. Hotel staff wax nostalgic about the various luminaries who have stayed here, such as Catherine Deneuve and REM, but it's actually more fit for royalty than rock stars.Prince Charles himself would undoubtedly find much to praise in the design, an aristocratic blend of Russian czar-era palace and old-English hunting lodge. The predictably outstanding bar and restaurant downstairs are festooned with the antlers of African hartebeests and other exotic ruminants; the hotel even arranges hunting trips for guests. While the doubles could use more closet space, they're kitted out with antique French and Russian furniture and contain every amenity imaginable. The deluxe rooms are plenty big if you're willing to spend a little more. While kings, queens and newly rich Russians will feel right at home here, it may feel a bit lofty for mere mortals like you and me.

Pause at the exit of the hotel and flip a coin. If it's heads, turn right and tour Riga Castle and its various museums. If it's tails (or if it's Monday and the museums are closed), turn left toward Dome Cathedral and spend the afternoon drinking beer at one of the outdoor beer gardens on Dome Square.
