If you want to see what that often misused term 'Scandinavian-style' is all about, look no further than the Metropole, a stately classic on the edge of Old Town that's been around since 1871.Scandinavian fastidiousness pervades every aspect of the Metropole. Service is friendly and professional and the entire hotel appears to be an officially sanctioned grit-free zone. The rooms and beds are plenty big enough to accommodate the burliest of Scandinavian frames, which means they're probably big enough for you. You could throw a party in the massive closets. The colour scheme of the interior roughly matches the Swedish flag - steel-blue doors, carpets and furniture, yellow walls, and bright plank-wood floors. The adjoining Columbine restaurant is nice in a lavish, old-Russian kind of way. Fans of minimalism need not apply. Parking is available for a fee and there is no Internet access in the rooms, although guests can surf for free on the business-centre computer.

If you're an opera fan, this is the place for you. The National Opera Theatre is across the street. One morning you should cross 13 Janvara iela, cut behind the bus station and check out Riga's central market, the biggest in the Baltics.
Metropole was renowned as a centre of diplomatic intrigue and espionage in the 1930s.
