A restrained formality greets you in the marble-clad lobby of this 1924 beaux arts building. The sort of quiet elegance that attracts privacy-seeking celebs. Want to be similarly pampered? Don't worry, the discreet staff won't tell anyone your name.

Most anyone who's walked around Austin has seen it - that big, long, second story terrace overlooking Congress Ave. That's the Stephen F bar, where highfalutin Austinites mingle, sip pricey scotch and smoke cigars. Out-of-towners revel in its view of the capital and the parade of humanity going by below. On ground level, Roaring Forks restaurant serves southwestern specialties, like green chile-rubbed pork enchiladas. Eating and drinking aren't the only attractions here. Mosaic tile walls surrounding the indoor lap pool and hot tub, create a European bathhouse feel. Neoclassical touches like Grecian swag draperies and urn-shape table bases make the rooms coolly classic. If you like history, stop on the mezzanine to see pictures of the original - incredibly spartan - 1920s rooms. What a difference from today.
