Walk along the Texas limestone floor under Art Deco pendant lights. Relax in a sleek cocoa-brown leather chair in the library. Sip a tequila cocktail infused with grapefruit juice and 7up at the refined bar. Dive into the stainless-steel pool. Everywhere you go in the Emily Morgan, gracious living follows you.

Emily Morgan (actually her name was West) was a free African American who came west in 1835. She worked as a housekeeper for Captain Morgan's hotel. Legend has it that she 'distracted' Santa Anna before a key battle, allowing the Texans win their war for independence. Though there's very little to substantiate this claim, it makes for a good story. The hotel uses her name to evoke an era, but there's no connection to the building. The hotel was built as a medical arts complex in 1924. Look for the exterior gargoyles transfixed with various ailments. Inside luxurious touches include champagne silk linens and Aveda products for the bath. The Plaza Suite is the pick of the litter with huge marble whirlpool tub and views of the Alamo. Free Internet and an all nonsmoking property are non-traditional perks in this price category.
