One of Rio's most expensive hotels, the Sofitel does its best to dazzle visitors with its lavishness. The excellent service, comfortable rooms, lovely pools and beach-front location has earned many fans - even more so since completing much needed renovations in recent years.Neck and neck with that other five-star hotel up the road (the Copacabana Palace), the Sofitel is definitely the top choice for executives. All of the rooms are carpeted and have balconies and huge beds. They exude a tastefully restrained ambience, and the deluxe rooms and suites have ocean views. At the upper price echelon, you'll find sumptuous suites, with a handsome modern design that includes king-size beds, dual armchairs, a marble coffee table and artwork. There's also a VIP floor, where those who pay through the nose can enjoy their own private breakfast room as well as free open bar after 17:00. Other features for all to enjoy are the two lovely swimming pools (one for morning sun, the other for afternoon), the sauna and exercise room, the bar and restaurant and of course the inviting Copacabana beach, which is 40 metres from the entrance.

The Le Pré Catalan restaurant inside the hotel is one of Rio's best French restaurants. For a treat, start your night here, go out on the town, and perhaps have a nightcap at the Horse's Neck, a second floor bar with an open-air patio overlooking the long, elegant curve of Copacabana beach.
Plenty of celebs have stayed here, including Frank Sinatra, who played and stayed here at the hotel's opening in 1979. Jacques Chirac, Mikhail Gorbachev, John Travolta and Barry White have all stayed.
