Lonely Planet review

The friendly Ercoli is a straight-up, no-frills pensione, popular with foreign students. It's not a big place and the 14 rooms are functional rather than memorable, but they're all sparkling clean, breakfast is included and the air-con works. Some way from the traditional tourist haunts, the Ercoli is housed in a large residential palazzo 15 minutes from Termini. As in many similar buildings the lift is tiny, providing barely enough room for an average-sized student and backpack. Still, make it up to the 3rd floor and you'll find a good, honest pensione with unfussy rooms at fair prices. Thanks to a recent makeover, rooms have lost their former chi-chi look and taken on a lighter, more modern feel. All come with small en-suite bathrooms, the beds are new and the furniture is unfussy. There's even pay-per-view TV, a rarity in the budget price bracket. For a place to bunk down for the night, this'll do fine.
