Arguably Trastevere's best hotel, this inviting three-star is a haven of calm. Housed in a renovated 17th-century cloister it has 19 attractive rooms set, hacienda-style, around a romantic courtyard garden with orange trees. The young English-speaking staff are welcoming and very professional.

Boasting a superb location, chilled atmosphere and friendly staff, this cracking hotel has got the lot. Just off Piazza di Santa Maria, it's right in the heart of Trastevere yet manages to be secluded and spacious. Its tranquil atmosphere is down to the monastic layout - a central courtyard surrounded by brick porticoes - and efficient, unobtrusive service. Rooms are cool and relaxing, their decor a combination of terracotta tiles, cream walls and showy bedsteads. This is the sort of place you look forward to returning to. In summer the excellent breakfast is served in the courtyard while in winter you eat in the vaulted dining room, a converted artisan's workshop. If pushed for a drawback, the bells from the nearby Basilica di Santa Maria might keep some people awake.
