La Residenza is a pleasantly old-fashioned four-star. The ground floor public rooms resemble a 19th-century gentleman's club, while the carpeted guest rooms are comfortable, clean and spacious. But what sets this unpretentious hotel apart is its magnificent breakfast - bacon, eggs, sausages, fruit, cereal, bread rolls, coffee.

As you sink into a leather armchair in the antique-laden lobby you could easily forget that you're a stone's throw from Via Vittorio Veneto, Rome's most dashing street. The atmosphere is muted and even the piped music (The Cure when we passed!) rests rather than rouses. Rooms make less of an impression with their fading furniture and bland decor. However, most are reasonably sized and some even have their own balcony, although the hotel won't guarantee one when you book. In the smart bathrooms you'll find bathrobes and heated towels, something you could easily forgo in the hot summer months. Room service is available and the professional English-speaking staff will happily arrange babysitting for exhausted parents.
