Part gentlemen's club, part Roman palace, the Britannia is a fun four-star. Dodgy frescoes and horse-and-hound paintings hang in the corridors with floors that are parquet one minute, inlaid marble or carpet the next. Rooms are similarly ad hoc with antique furniture, floral chintz and sparkling marble-clad bathrooms.

Picture, if you can, a Las Vegas recreation of ancient Rome set in an 18th-century country house. Not easy, we know, but that's more or less what the Britannia looks like. The downstairs public rooms feature marble floors, a wood-lined bar, any number of fake columns and some startling frescoes. In comparison, the cutesy decor of the upstairs guest rooms seems a model of understatement. Which, of course, it isn't. Soundproofing keeps out the worst of the noise while sun lamps in the bathroom mean that you can clean your teeth while brushing up on your tan. Wi-fi is available.
