The beautiful US Grant Hotel has stood stately in its Edwardian stature since 1910 - not long when one considers the age of European castles, but, for the young California, it's old, wise and full of tales.Though it has aged gracefully for the most part, the historical hotel can't help but have greyed a tad. Thus, in true California fashion, it's now undergoing some reconstructive surgery. The new management - Starwood Hotels, which purchased it in 2003 - has begun a multimillion renovation of the building and its 285 rooms and suites. This promises a luxury update that will hopefully bring the interior to its deserved grandeur. The historic hotel, which has an on-site restaurant and tea time Thursday to Sunday afternoons, was built by Ulysses S Grant Jr, and named for his father, president Ulysses S Grant. Throughout the years, it has hosted folks we know from history books, like Charles Lindbergh, Albert Einstein and president and Mrs Eisenhower. We wonder if they would recognise its newly made-over self.

Gleaming goods at Horton Plaza shopping mall, across the road, will wear down the resistance of the biggest miser. Check out the Arts Tix booth right in front for half-price tickets to performing arts events. Nearby Little Italy has more eating and drinking options than you can noodle around a fork. The rowdy Gaslamp Quarter, full of beer, bands and more food, is also within walking distance.
Civil rights in action: in 1969, eight women showed up at the on-site Grant Grill, putting a hand up to the men-only-before-15:00 policy. The 'Grant Grill Six' were later lauded for their resistance.
