Lonely Planet review

Since 1867 this elegant temple of marble and crystal has attracted the high society of Europe. It boasts an incomparable riverside location where it looks like a ship of state. This is classic old-world luxury.

Everything about this five-star edifice is spectacular, from its imposing location overlooking the Amstel, to its magnificent colonnaded lobby and, of course, its list of posh, soundless rooms. Reverential - no, deferential - service and luxe extras such as chauffeured limousines, concierges who don't know the word 'no', a heated indoor pool and a fitness centre with all sorts of steam options delight even the fussiest transatlantic celebrities and Euro royalty. The Amstel's 111 lavishly decorated rooms and suites are outfitted with all you'd expect: showers dispensing water in waterfall proportions, bathrobes, twice daily maid service and lots of fussy little old-fashioned doo-dads like lint removers. There is 24-hour room service, which allows you to stay concooned for days, or La Rive restaurant with a decidedly clubby atmosphere and fine Med-flavoured fare.
