Nashville's first million-dollar hotel was a hit with the socialites when it opened in 1910. The palatial lobby is decorated with rich tapestries and ornate carvings; rooms have mahogany furniture and deep marble soaking tubs.Walking into The Hermitage lobby is like entering the princely palace in some turn-of-the-century Eastern European duchy. Guests sip tea on plush couches under a vaulted ceiling painted in rose and blue, or breakfast in the sunny balcony room. Soft beds are draped in brocaded coverlets; bathrooms are pure marble. Downstairs, the formal Capitol Grille restaurant is located in what used to be the hotel's private men's club, a gathering spot for local politicos, captains of industry and gangsters. Six presidents have slept at The Hermitage, as well as 20th-century icons like Bette Davis, Greta Garbo and Al Capone. Pool legend Minnesota Fats even lived here for eight years, challenging all comers at his own table on the mezzanine level!

Visit the Tennessee State Museum on 5th Avenue, a large and genuinely engaging look at the state's history. The museum includes Indian handicrafts, a life-size log cabin, 18th-century printing press, and a walk-through 'hellfire and brimstone' revival diorama, complete with sound effects. Exhibits cover the abolitionist movement from as early as 1797, as well as the KKK, which began here in 1868.
