The chic and stylin' Hotel Palomar is decked out with crocodile-print carpets, stripy persimmon-red chairs, chocolate-brown wood and cheetah-print robes in the closet. Hugh Hefner would definitely approve.

The hotel plays on a design theme of 'art in motion'. Upon entering the clubby lobby, the you first notice the Escher-inspired pattern in the multidimensional-looking wood floor; then you see the art installations, such as the super-cool backlit filmstrips behind the desk. The Palomar opened in 1999, the last year of the dotcom boom, and the place exudes an anything-goes confidence. A renovation in 2007 toned down the excessive use of animal prints in guest rooms, but the look remains sexy if more restrained, with touches like warm-wood headboards with inset squares of orange-red velvet. Beds are sumptuous, with top-quality mattresses, feather-light down comforters and high-thread-count Frette linens. Though the hotel sits smack dab downtown, rooms are silent due to soundproof windows (which don't open, but the ventilation system moves in lots of fresh air).
