The ugly exterior of the Vitale disguises one of the city's sexiest, most fashion-forward hotels, with echoes of mid-century modern design complemented by up-to-the-minute luxuries and soothing color palettes.

The Vitale plays off a spa theme - outside every door aromatic sprigs of lavender protrude from tiny vases. Rooms are done in shades of silver, grey and pale blue, and have a coolly minimalist style, with glass-topped end tables, containing marbles and stones, that light up from underneath, casting a moody glow at night. The better the room, the better the bath. Alas, standard bathrooms have fluorescent lighting; thank goodness you don't have to turn it on - instead use the halogen spots, controlled by dimmers. Beds are as good as they get, with silky-soft 450-thread-count sheets. Suites offer more than just space, with extras like waterfall showerheads, limestone baths, two-person soaking tubs, iPod docking stations and - best of all - semi-circular glass walls with stunning Bay Bridge views.
