Anchors aweigh for the Argonaut, the best hotel at Fisherman's Wharf. The over-the-top nautical theme begins outside the front doors, where doormen stand watch in navy-blue gold-striped pants and puffy white sleeves, like characters out of a Gilbert and Sullivan musical. The Argonaut sits on the city's northern waterfront, directly across the road from the tall ships moored at San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park, and occupies a 1908 brick building that was once a fruit-canning warehouse. The hotel opened in 2003, and the jaunty-chic decor looks smart, but because of the building's historic-landmark status, designers were not allowed to alter the fundamental architecture. Rooms have huge, century-old wooden beams and exposed brick walls, which add a rich character, as do the porthole-shaped mirrors and the plush carpets with their dizzying pattern of stars. Though they have the amenities of an upper-end hotel, such as ultra-comfy beds and stereo CD players, some rooms are tiny, and get limited sunlight because of their small windows. But if you're willing to pay a premium, you can get a room with a mesmerizing bay view.

Irish coffee was invented one block from the Argonaut at the Buena Vista Café (2765 Hyde St), which has been open since 1916, making it one of the oldest bars in town. Yes, it's packed with tourists, but who did you expect to find at Fisherman's Wharf? Certainly not locals.
