Amsterdam's former city hall (1808-1987) was the scene of Queen Beatrix's civil wedding in 1966. You may feel a bit royal yourself as you wander through the cavernous lobby, grandiose public spaces and stained-glassed stairwells. Active types will enjoy the triangular indoor pool, fitness centre and steam rooms. Like all Sofitels, it comes with a bit of scenester buzz.

From the inner garden, with its fountains and trellises, you could be forgiven for thinking that you're, well, someplace that isn't Amsterdam. And see if you don't fall in love with the wedding chamber, with its Jugendstil murals and windows (in fact it might inspire you to fall in love…). When at last you reach your old-world-style room (one of 178), you can lounge in your bathrobe, call on the 24-hour room service, or luxuriate in your flash black-and-white art deco bathroom. As the building was not designed as a hotel, every room is different, but most have views of the garden or the historic canals. Should you be lucky enough to book a suite, you'll understand why they're named for notable one-time visitors like William of Orange and Maria de' Medici.
