Rio Amazonas II is both colorful and frayed at the seams, but it's a real steal for singles. The owners are extra nice. You'll find it tucked away in Barrio Brasil, away from most of the touristy stuff.

For solo travelers who prefer a private bath, this hostel's a score; you won't get a better price. A red tile roof and colonial facade open up to a pleasant and bright interior courtyard filled with plants and tables. Stucco walls are painted in yellows and reds. Though the mattresses are a bit saggy and tired, this place oozes friendly - from the nine-year-old roller-skating along the cobbled hallways to her mother's warm welcome. Though rooms are on the small size and the decor could be fresher (the Amazon posters are starting to curl) it's put together with a sense of warmth and cheer.
