At the base of the mountain in Perissa, these happy apartments make an appealing base, particularly for families with young children. There's plenty of room to roam around and it's removed from the main road and boisterous beachfront.

Ira has two adjacent sections, both built around a pool with bar; the beach is a 10-minute walk away. There are two types of accommodation, all brightly painted and cheerful, as well as being very good value for Santorini. The studio apartments can sleep two to three adults and have sturdy wooden furniture, and good balconies, some overlooking the pool. They have air-con, phone, fan and kitchenette. Even better are the maisonettes, which are attractive split-level affairs with iron bedsteads. The same genial owners have a similar set-up, Scorpio, near Agios Georgios beach, five minutes away by car and accessible by bus. Scorpio is almost identical, but has the advantage of having sea views from all rooms and the sound of breaking waves. Like Ira, there's a pool and barbecue area, and it's set in quiet countryside. Both are very good bases for a fun, family break.
