The 223-room Edgewater doesn't just have views of Elliott Bay; it sits on an actual pier. It could get by on its excellent scenery, but stunning design and smart service make it worth a stay for the moneyed traveler.

The Edgewater began as a temporary hotel built for the 1963 World's Fair, but what a difference a few decades makes. At that time, people paid a premium to hang over the bay and fish from their rooms. Times have changed and fishing is no longer allowed from the building, but that doesn't make the Edgewater any less worthwhile. The lobby is like a Northwest hunting lodge in the year 2500, with stainless-steel columns transformed into trees with bionic branches. Armchairs hewn from logs sit aside antler lamps and bay views. Faux birch bark wallpaper is simply cool. Other Seattle lodgings may have larger rooms, but few have more style. Each room has a gas fireplace, a teddy bear in a red sweater on the bed, and bathrooms with natural stone floors. Many bathrooms feature claw tubs or glass-enclosed showers.
