The Inn at the Market is the only lodging in the venerable Pike Place Market, but that doesn't mean it's for the average tourist. On the contrary, it's elegant and architecturally interesting, filled with contemporary paintings and sculpture, and set around a gorgeous courtyard.Built in 1985 and recently renovated, this 70-room boutique hotel has large rooms, many of which enjoy grand views onto market activity and Elliott Bay. 'City View' rooms are smaller and less expensive, but all rooms are cool and cheerful with muted colors and comfy beds. Most bathrooms are quite large. No matter what room you choose, you can lounge on the lovely water-view deck, open 24 hours. There's wireless internet access throughout and a fax machine in your room, and the inn's staff is commendably pleasant and helpful. There's no fitness center, but 15.00 gets you into the upscale Seattle Athletic Club a block away, where facilities include a swimming pool and whirlpool.

Believe it or not, we're actually going to suggest a Starbucks (tel: 206 448 8762; 1912 Pike Pl). The first-ever store is located downtown right near Pike Place Market. It's small and it's usually packed, but remember: before it became the mega-chain that it is, it was once part of what was unique about Seattle.
