Clearly the work of an architect with an affinity for jigsaw puzzles and mazes, the Pulitzer is cobbled together from 25, 17th-century canal houses. But it combines big-hotel efficiency with boutique-hotel charm. And plenty of extras to spread around.

The Pulitzer's 230 beautifully restored, canal- or garden-view rooms vary from ancient house to ancient house, but all have mod cons galore, including sweet and cosy bathrooms. There are loads of extras too: choose from a cigar bar, art gallery, 24-hour fitness centre, private 75-minute canal cruise, wonderful restaurant, and garden courtyards, all high on elegance and low on pomposity. The scale of the hotel and number of meeting rooms means that it gets its share of business travellers, weddings and the like, but leisure travellers are well cared for with bicycle rentals and a tempting list of suggested excursions. Afternoon tea in the garden of Pulitzer's restaurant is a treat.
