Address: No 20 north suzhou road shanghai china , Shanghai 200080, China Show on map
Looming over Suzhou Creek, this classic, brick Art Deco pile affords top-drawer views over the north Bund, the Huangpu River and Pudong. Built to great fanfare in 1934 as an apartment block, it was later used to house American officers after WWII.Thorough refurbishment has restored dignity and a measure of exclusivity to this classic hotel - also known as Shanghai Mansions - just across the road from the Astor House Hotel. Rooms are elegantly finished to a high quality, with attractive bathrooms. The refurbishment has naturally found its way into the tariff, which has gone through the Art Deco roof; however, you can nab a standard non-view room or a river-view room for almost a third of the tariff, so do ask for discounts. It's worth the extra few hundred kuài for views of the river and you don't really want a room facing the miserable north. On the map it may seem a bit stranded on the wrong side of Suzhou Creek, but the Bund is a mere stroll across Waibaidu Bridge (although it was removed for restoration at the time of writing). The area though is grittier and less salubrious than flashier parts of Shànghai.
