A stylish element of the Bund Center with a new Grand Tower and capped with its characteristic lotus-bud crown, the Westin is the best hotel in this district just north of the Old Town and west of the Bund.

Knocking spots off the competitors, the Westin is a classy option in the congested Shànghai top-end market. The hotel has a welcoming and unstuffy layout with eye-catching and tasteful art work, not the gauche pieces that litter other hotels. Creative interior design abounds and the fresh and bright mood is lifted by the main light-filled atrium. All rooms exude comfort, with heavenly beds, broadband internet and bathrooms with rainforest shower heads and deep baths. Overseen by polite and efficient staff, security extends to guest cards for operating the lift. A gaggle of top-of-the-line facilities is at hand: the Thai-style Banyan Tree spa, an imported food store and deli, and restaurants including The Stage (one of Shànghai's best for brunch) and stylish Italian at Prego. The tariff is hefty, but 40-50% discounts are typical.
