The Yangtze was built in 1934 and the exterior, including the wonderful Art Nouveau balconies, has largely been preserved. Shut for renovation at the time of writing, fingers were crossed that redecoration would banish the faded and musty mood that had gripped the interior.

Prior to refit, rooms were decent value and most rooms come with bathtub-sized balconies for inhalation of Shànghai's sulphurous air. Doubles were neither spacious nor bright, however, and equipped with old style furniture and small baths. Pokey, dark staircases climb up into the hotel to guestrooms strung out along tatty corridors. Run by the same group managing the Hengshan Hotel, the Hengshan Picardie Hotel and the Hengshan Moller Villa - all heritage buildings - the Yangtze was in need of a makeover, but it does boast historical charm and a fabulous location next to the brick Moore Protestant church just east of the People's Square metro hub. Hopefully renovations will bring a much-needed modern twist to the former museum-like torpor.
