Its fairyland architectural motifs finding echo in surrounding buildings, Moller House is one of Shà nghai's most idiosyncratic and distinctive buildings. Off-limits for years (after a long spell as the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Youth League), the villa now serves as a peaceful boutique hotel run by the Shanghai Hengshan group. Its main building still undergoing restoration at the time of writing, this ornate and whimsical marvel dates back to 1936. The crazy brickwork, never-never land turrets, gorgeous lawn and impeccable interior features sees the best rooms frequently booked out - booking ahead is highly advisable. Monopolising all the history and style, the main building only extends to a handful of expensive rooms; otherwise, the dull, 3-storey modern block to the rear houses the cheaper superior rooms (clean with smart bathrooms). However, the dreadful English of the website suggests the usual litany of problems associated with Chinese-run hotels.
