Built as a Masonic temple in 1929, this monster stood empty for 77 years before it opened in 2007 as a hotel. Some rooms overlook the State House (through small windows) and are decorated in forceful colors that attempt, with limited success, to evoke Masonic traditions. The graffiti artist who once tagged the vacant building was hired to do his thing to an over-the-top 'Masonic' hotel bar. This building just might be the longest in the making since the pyramids: the cornerstone was laid in 1926 but the doors didn't open until 2007! This colonnaded heavyweight occupies the shell of a Masonic temple that went bust in mid-construction when the Great Depression hit. It lay abandoned until 2004, but this time smart hoteliers had their eyes on the prize. They've taken the stately hulk and transformed it into a refined luxury hotel that's grand without being stodgy. You'll find fun hints to the Masonic past, like temple columns on the headboards, but the theme's not overdone. The stylish guest rooms invite a good sleep with a pair of comfortable queen beds topped with soft down comforters. The bathrooms are huge and little extras like plush bathrobes add a cozy touch. For a memorable view, request a room overlooking the night-lit marble-domed Statehouse.

Walk over to the nearby Rhode Island Statehouse and check out the motley collection of items found there. It houses moon dust, Civil War battle relics and a Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington that you may want to compare with the one on that dollar bill in your wallet.
It cost 100million to give the abandoned temple a new life, making it the largest restoration project in Rhode Island's history.
