This art nouveau delight is in top form, with a crisp white and caramel colour scheme and hip, contemporary designer furniture. Other pleasures include a solarium, steam bath and whirlpool, garden-view bar and attentive staff.

With 62 rooms, the Jan Luyken is a mid-size hotel, yet because of its setting in three late-19th-century mansions the feel is more intimate than the size suggests. Public spaces on the ground floor like the gem box of a lobby bar and lounge illustrate this. The construction of the three original buildings is evident once you head upstairs. The rooms vary in shape and size; some rooms have bathtub, and others showers with generous showerheads. 'Superior' rooms can be quite large and come with a menu of cute books for you to read, pillows, CDs and prints of doleful looking historical figures on the walls. The Jan Luyken gets its share of business travellers, but non-business guests will appreciate the full-on comfort. This is the place for an elegant holiday savouring the finest of local museums. The buffet breakfast includes champagne to start your day right.
