Bookended by an HSBC and a Bank of China, this impressive twin-towered five-star hotel possesses a colossal and expansive lobby and some of the best gym and sports facilities in Shànghai.

The occasional faded brasswork around the lobby area takes some of the shine off the opulence, but the ceiling is magnificent and the scale is quite breathtaking - dwarfing even - with grand staircases leading off to either side. Potted trees - including magnolias - add welcome splashes of green. Service at this hotel is generally excellent. Rooms are comfortable enough and well-equipped, but deluxe rooms are rather old; more modern-looking premier rooms are swisher (and pricier). The hotel incorporates the Shanghai International Tennis Center; other sports facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a squash court, a bowling alley and a fully equipped health club. A variety of dining options is at hand but eating out in the French Concession should be a priority. The Regal provides good wheelchair access. Decent discounts bring deluxe rooms down around 50%.
