Instantly recognisable for its gaudy glass globes echoing the baubles of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, this five-star hotel on the east bank of the Huangpu River is attached to the Shanghai International Convention Centre Hotel.

An extra fee gets you a room with a Bund view (worth it), while another upgrade gets you a deluxe room. The spacious rooms come equipped with modern facilities; although used largely by conventions, the hotel also serves as a decent tourist choice, close to the Bund and Pudong sights without the noise and traffic. Some guests however find the hotel rooms rather faded and not up to par. Transport options are also good, with the Lujiazui metro station on metro line No 2 nearby . The best rooms are on the 6th floor, but it's a shame there are no balconies. Facilities include a 9th-floor swimming pool and health club and an 11th-floor bar with views. Rack rates are high, but excellent discounts are generally available, especially during the slack season.
