The UFO atop this Radisson tower is typically derivative, noughties Shànghai. In this case, the spaceship's B-movie sci-fi contours echo the clock tower of the Pacific Hotel below and the cupolas of the adjacent New World. Classic elegance? No way, but the perch just north of People's Park is a highly prized plot.

The lobby is way over-the-top: a mellifluous splurge, with roll-top furniture and the occasional Art Deco feature drenched in a golden glow. But the uninspiring design is unsophisticated and showy, hovering on bad taste; a cheapness to the finish also raises eyebrows. Good-value standard rooms (with free broadband) in this brand-spanking new hotel are however excellent and views over Puxi are supreme, especially from higher floors. Low-level vistas over People's Park from the 2nd-floor Windows on the Park merely graze the treetops, but for a genuine panorama ascend to Epicure on 45, a revolving restaurant in the rooftop flying saucer. For drinks and even better views, hit the Sky Dome Bar above on the 47th floor.
