Imported direct from the banks of the Rhine, this turreted Germanic folly with its sweeping arcades was christened the headquarters of the Teutonia Club in 1900 and began its apprenticeship as a hotel in 1914. It has high-standard rooms fitted out with exceedingly comfortable modern furnishings, plus a marvellous tree-fringed pool area to lounge by.

There are a half dozen types of bed chamber to choose from, from spacious deluxe rooms to the aptly named, chandelier-lit 'Brunei Suite'. For something a bit jazzier, try one of the self-contained, split-level 'Parklane Suites', located in a side wing of the building. A placard in front of the hotel says 'The King Is Back', which is not a religious proclamation but a sign of affection for one of Asia's most maligned fruits, the durian. The Goodwood's chefs have tamed this evil smelling foodstuff and use it to make surprisingly tasty durian-pulp pastries, sold from a counter off reception.
