Chefs stride past with white Leaning Tower of Pisa hats, door staff proffer broad smiles from behind crisp white uniforms, elegant shops loiter under iconic white arches. Welcome to a lavish, old-fashioned world where white means everything's alright and colonial grandeur still reigns supreme.

Raffles began its life in 1887, and was the quintessential luxury retreat for a pampered elite well into the latter half of the 20th century. It underwent several years of renovations before revealing its new facelift in 1991. Raffles asserts that it is 'patronised by nobility, and loved by all', which exemplifies the hardiness of colonial sensibilities and the hotel's refusal to let go of its aloof past. And why should it? After all, people flock here to indulge in the five-star service and facilities, from the gorgeous wrought-iron courtyard bar and surrounding garden to the antique furniture and the Persian carpets that cushion all footfalls. The high-ceilinged rooms lead on to broad verandahs and are predictably sumptuous, though not too stuffed with period fittings to cramp the personal style of any guest.
