A one-time bank building, this is one of the classiest recent additions to the luxe end of Amsterdam. The design is inspired by the Amsterdam school of architecture, with a little art deco thrown in for good measure. Hospitality is the buzzword and amenities like drinks and snacks in the living-room-like lounge and in the minibar are free. Yes, free.

The antidote for every hotel guest who ever thought they were simply a mark for every sort of get-rich-quick-scheme imaginable (10.00 minibar beers etc etc etc), the Mansion includes most extras in the price. Rooms vary in size, but all are contemporary cool, with plasma screen TV, DVD player, wet bar with pour-your-own gin, whisky and cognac (go on, make it a triple), terry cloth robe, and your choice from a menu of pillows. Breakfast (included of course) is a full-on affair with a range of choices, including many more healthy than sinful. If you're sensitive to noise, request a room away from busy Vijzelstraat (especially on the ground floor).
