The luxurious Aleksandar Palace is the first choice for visiting politicians and celebrities, but be prepared to take taxis everywhere as it's 3km (2mi) from the centre. The tastefully decorated rooms offer all of the mod cons you would expect for the price, including free Internet connection.Step into the cavernous marble-clad reception with its six-storey-high atrium painted with an immense mural of historic Macedonian buildings and you're entering a self-contained world for those who live in Charge Account Land. There's the usual collection of airline offices, rental car agencies and exchange offices on the ground floor, as well as a casino, massage studio, solarium, six outdoor tennis courts and the city's best gymnasium. The rooms are all well appointed with expansive views and the apartments come in different categories of opulence, including 'de luxe', 'barok' and 'royal'.

Not far over the river are the ruins of ancient Skupi. The town was founded in the 4th century BC by the Illyrians, the ancestors of the present day Albanians. It never became part of Alexander's Macedonian empire and it remained under Thracian rule until 148BC when it was taken over by the Romans. There's not a lot to see here now, but it makes for a pleasurable wander from the hotel.
