Run by the folks at the less-inviting Internet Hostel, the Red Star is more of a cheapie guesthouse than hostel. There's three private rooms - simple wood-floors with shared bath - and a dorm. It's all kept clean, and the old building is evocatively offers a glimpse of Sofia's yesteryears. Rooms look into a closet-sized 'TV room' where English-speaking staff sit around (not always the most versed in travel tips around Bulgaria). The 'blue room' is the best private option, as it has its own TV and balcony. The Internet for all is tucked away inconveniently in the dorm. The owners' main location is the ho-hum Internet Hostel with four rooms and another cramped sitting area. At research time, they were planning to open a third location, Oriental Express - with a similar layout to the Red Star. In all, these are fine back-ups to Sofia's better hostels.
