Set on Sofia's City Park, facing the red-and-white Ivan Vazov National Theatre, the 122-room Grand Hotel Sofia is Sofia's glass-and-granite luxury master. Second-floor power conferences reap in some of its business, but big spenders like Scarlett Johansson also pick the Grand.

Uniformed attendants usher guests into the all-marble lobby, where there's a dining room, cigar bar, Bulgarian art, and a lobby lounge where well-dressed guests linger over cocktails or espresso. Even the smallest rooms could envelope small nations - they're called 'superior' on the lower floors and 'executive' on upper levels. Surrounded by lightly striped wallpaper, two tassled love seats face the bed (with massive dark-wood headboards) and there's a small work desk where you can get high-speed Internet. Some room rates include the breakfast buffet. All can enjoy the health club's work-out area . Rates drop outside the peak seasons (roughly September to November, and February to May).
