Dozens of families in Split offer summer homestay accommodation. But very few offer rooms with balconies. And probably none can beat the stupendous views that you get from the two rooms at Ana and Miki's place. The better choice is air-conditioned Room Miki whose balcony doors open up a vista encompassing the whole sweep of Split Bay, the campanile of St Duje tickling the backdrop of grey Dalmatian peaks. From Room Ana, the balcony is much narrower and faces south so the views are more oblique albeit still fine. The young owners speak English and their guesthouse receives positive reports from backpackers. But don't expect any fancy decor. This remains very much a homestay with family portrait photos watching you from over the bed. The two guest rooms share a single bathroom with a decent enclosed shower booth. Access to the guest floor is up a steep curl of spiral stairs that wouldn't suit the infirm. Note that the family also rents other nearby apartments but they lack the spectacular views. Pick-ups from the bus station are possible by arrangement.

Café Vidilica, just two minutes' walk uphill from the guesthouse offers similarly wonderful views that you can enjoy over a decent espresso or a cold Kaltenberg pils. From here there are appealing, gentle hikes around pine-clad Mt Marjan topped by a sweet little zoo showing mostly farmyard animals.
