Several informal guesthouses offer a handful of no-nonsense rooms or apartments in the heart of the old city. B&B Kaštel is one of the more professionally run with sensible prices and relatively high standards.

This tall, narrow guesthouse sits right beside the southwest corner of Diocletian's Palace wall. South facing rooms have the added bonus of windows that look out across the Riva to the sea. The ground-floor triple is tastefully decorated in pastel tones, though some other rooms use a vaguely bilious green and yellow colour-scheme. Beds are comfortable and showers are powerful but tend to soak the floor of your attached bathroom. There's satellite TV and efficient air-conditioning. Higher rooms mean many stairs, making this place inappropriate for the disabled (like many options in Split). Light sleepers beware that quietly quaint Mihovilna širina transforms into party central around midnight, with the joyful babble of youthful crowds creating a great but noisy atmosphere well into the small hours.
