This practical modern cube is an ideal business choice. The 36 rooms are unexpectedly stylish, reliably comfortable and more spacious than in most of Split's bigger hotels. The location is dull but ideal for vehicle access and only 15 minutes' walk from the old town. The yellow and charcoal-grey colour blocks give a little Mondrian-esque interest to the rectilinear facade. The feeling of chic modernity is emphasised by plush red-suede settees and a sweeping curve of work desk which replaces a traditional reception area in the quietly hip cafe-lobby area. Apart from the higher-than-expected ceilings, it's very hard to believe that the building was once a cake factory. Guest rooms have brilliant-white bathrooms with glistening microphone-shaped stainless-steel showerheads. The bedrooms use soft greens and yellows which are pleasant if not quite so self-consciously fashionable. Pillows are agreeably puffy. Internet use is included in your bill and some rooms have free use of a portable computer if you request it in advance. There is pretty efficient double glazing but north facing rooms might still suffer a certain degree of road noise.

While Split's old town is a delight, it's well worth taking a day trip to the charming village of Trogir. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a quiet contrast to Split's vibrant big city atmosphere. Get there on the handy No 37 bus, which starts its journey from the local bus terminal a block or so from the hotel.
