Stockholm's oldest hotel occupies an eight-storey waterfront building and has a charming seafaring atmosphere. Rooms feature exposed brick walls and dark wood panelling, wooden floors and sumptuous furnishings.

Back in its younger days, the Reisen was the place where sailors long deprived of good coffee went for their caffeine fix when they stopped off in Stockholm. It's been a hotel since 1819 and in that time has learned a thing or two about how the luxury-hotel business is done. Deluxe rooms have spectacular views over the water, as well as in-room Jacuzzis or saunas or both. But you can catch glimpses of the sea even if you're staying in a room without a direct view of the water, thanks to cleverly arranged mirrors. Note to visitors on the make: if you stay in one of the deluxe suites you're allowed to bring a guest to breakfast. The attached restaurant is highly rated. There's also an extraordinary swimming pool and sauna in the brick-vaulted cellar.
