Lonely Planet review

This is old-style luxury (with modern touches where it counts, for example in the bathrooms). The hotel dates back to the 1470s, and is packed with antiques and portraits of Lady Hamilton herself, beloved of Lord Nelson.Lady Hamilton's statuette (a former ship's figurehead) welcomes guests in the lobby. Legend has it the young lady was so beautiful she stopped clocks. A fact that's easier to verify is that she was beloved by both Lord Nelson and the perhaps rather over-attentive painter George Romney, who painted her portrait in the guise of various goddesses with almost embarrassing frequency. The impressive vaulted basement features a sauna and dipping pool created from the remains of an old community well from the 1300s. The building itself has been around in more or less its current state since 1470. It was a merchant's home for a while, and the homey feel remains despite the fact the place later served as an office building. Service is tops, and rooms are furnished with grandmotherly comfort.
