Walking into the Nordic Light is a lesson in modern Scandinavian design. In the rooms, which are equipped to the hilt with all the comforts you'd expect, the typical ocean-view paintings or abstract artwork on the walls has been replaced with individual, specially designed light exhibits, which guests can adjust to suit their mood.Even more than its sister hotel, the Nordic Sea, this place is so chic it hurts. The lobby alone might inspire you to change immediately into something less comfortable. It features black-and-white design and cold, hard surfaces. These are unadorned but for the single most important element in contemporary Swedish design - light in a huge and ever-changing variety of shapes, colours and intensities. The mood has the potential to shift more quickly than a schizophrenic with PMS, but for the most part it hovers somewhere between chill-out lounge and decorative aquarium. There are saunas and jacuzzis in some of the rooms, and several have excellent views over the city centre.

The always-buzzing area around Stockholm's Central Station - also the hub for the underground rail system - is a nexus of restaurants, cafes, shopping malls and retail stores that are both classy and chintzy. Department stores NK, H&M and Ahlens are all nearby, as is the Sweden House tourist info centre and the urban park Kungsträdgården. It's about as central a location as you can get.
