Lonely Planet review

An exciting place that provides a great example of cohesive design, the Rival is the brainchild of ABBA's Benny Andersson and two other backers. Retro architecture pervades the building. Each room is decorated with posters from great Swedish films and comes with a teddy bear to make guests feel more at home. The complex, which sits at the edge of the lovely, tree-lined Mariatorget, includes a vintage 1940s movie theatre with an adorable, raised lobby like a sparkling red jewel. There's a hopping, multilevel cafe and bakery adjoining the theatre that serves wonderful pastries and coffee drinks, and on the opposite side of reception is a nice, slightly more sedate lounge. The swank cocktail bar is pure, over-the-top Art Deco. Several rooms have views out onto the square, and the deluxe suites on the top floor all have balconies. You can sleep under the lovely, watchful gaze of Greta Garbo. And did we mention the teddy bears?
