Almost in Hyde Park, this former Victorian office block has been reinvented as a series of hip, modern pads you'll wish you lived in: with cool kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, DVD players, onsite laundry, teak furniture and friendly staff. The location is a tad noisy, but hey, this is the big smoke! All 38 modern rooms here have a kitchenette, telephone, safe and internet access. A recent flurry of construction activity has resulted in some really impressive rooms, especially the two- and three bedroom apartments (perfect if you're on the road with a posse). Standard studio apartments feature flattering lighting, soundproofed windows and plenty of neutral tones with maroon accents. Staff are keen to find the best deal for guests - ask them what they can do for you, except at Mardi Gras time, when, like most places in these here parts, prices skyrocket. Parking and breakfast cost extra.

Hyde Park is right across the street - a formal park with manicured gardens, ibises probing the undergrowth, homeless hombres sleeping on benches and a giant chess-set attracting nods and whispers from spectators. The tree-formed tunnel running down its spine looks particularly cool at night, illuminated by fairy lights.
