Its orange spires rising dramatically above a large square, the Astrid Park could be described as contemporary Legoland architectural confection and would look at home on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Its high international standards make it one of the best options available if you want to be near the zoo, diamond museum and train station.

This hotel has plenty of artistic touches. The modern foyer is stylish and trendily sparse: white surfaces back-lit with buzzing electric-blue. Even the public toilets have panache. Dotted throughout are bronze sculptures and thoughtful canvases by Avi Kenan, who maintains a gallery on the first floor. Corridor walls are softened by stripes and pale panelling, giving a slightly homely New England feel. Rooms are furnished in a modern style that gives a nod to square-shouldered 1950s Art Deco. Big marble basins dominate the sparkling bathrooms. Executive rooms have a shower booth as well as a bath. The presidential suite is almost big enough to get lost in. The health club pool has a jacuzzi but the swimming pool is very narrow.
