Off the road in a quiet, beachside nook, this little place is about as pleasant as pleasant gets. This is a slice of paradise while still being an active, convenient jump-off point for anything you'd want to do on the island.

Far and away the best budget option near Pape'ete, Taaroa Lodge is ideally located on the best strip of white sand on the island. There are two standard but clean and adequately-sized bungalows that look out towards the lagoon and fringing reef. Back in the garden there's a convivial communal kitchen and a room in a house; bright dorms are upstairs. The atmosphere here is so laid-back and friendly that you might just want to hang out here and chat with the family or other backpackers all day. Fortunately, the beach beckons and you can walk a kilometre or two in either direction or swim and snorkel in the swimming pool-like lagoon out the front. Free, fresh baguettes are offered every morning. It's easy to hop on Le Truck (the bus) to get just about anywhere from here.
