With its soaring spikes of silver girded black glass, this international, business-style tower feels like a modernist iceberg photographed in negative. Its key advantage is its relatively easy access by vehicle and its proximity to Antwerp Expo and De Singel arts centre. However, it's inconvenient for visiting Old Antwerp.

The exterior might look harshly modernist with its dark glass. But the interior is altogether more alluring. Coffee and cream hues welcome you to a foyer striped with brown marble. Its ceiling is shaped like a pyramid, focusing attention on a trio of vast cream lampshades. At a quick glance these look like the rear end of an escaping space shuttle. The rather swish restaurant is called Tiffany's. Yes, that is indeed where you have breakfast. Although predominantly a business-minded hotel it's possible to rent bicycles through the reception. That's handy if you want to get into and around the old centre, nearly 3km (1.9mi) further north, where car parking can be a nightmare. Big price cuts can make stays here a remarkable bargain.
