Lonely Planet review

A brand new budget option for the city, this one offers hostel-like prices for large, clean hotel-like rooms. Sure, toilets and showers are shared (two each per floor), but with rooms this size and at these prices, no one seems to mind. You'll be grateful you packed light because there are many stairs to climb to one of downtown's grandest buildings, a Jugendstil wonder built in 1912. This is a new breed of hostel-like accommodation: no bunk beds, no room with more than five beds and the beds themselves are comfy and surprisingly wide. Rooms are sparsely furnished but huge (with gloriously high ceilings). Extra bonuses: staff are respectful and polite (mirroring the office-like atmosphere in the breezy, endless corridors) and there's wi-fi on each of the guesthouse's four floors. Doubles are larger than twins, and have TV and a table. Only the deluxe has private shower and toilet, though the shared ones are just fine. There's no kitchen to use, though breakfast is free. Rooms facing Pärnu maantee get noisy with the window open - ask for one facing Suur Karja tänav.
