Part of the elite Design Hotel chain, this sedate hotel, Tallinn's most expensive, is a five-star trip into the past which also stays firmly rooted to the luxuries of modern living. Assembled in three lovingly refurbished 14th-century buildings, it caters to those with refined taste for excellence.

Each room differs markedly from others; one has its own balcony, stretching out over the lobby, another used to be part of a horse stable and so has some old wooden tools inside. The most romantic is room 25, on the top floor, which has a view to the sea. The pricey Piano Suite is somewhat cold and officious. All have little surprises, like an old-style bathtub, original wooden floors, bits of uncovered medieval frescos, or covered canopy beds. Bathrooms tend to be stark, huge and modern. There is a sleek reading room which stocks glossy fashion magazines. Some of the other pluses - just some! - to make you feel coddled, include breakfast until 18:00, a selection of some of your favourite music ready to be played on your sound system and free airport pickup. They can arrange babysitting services and limousine rental too.
