Address: Skenderbej square 8 , Tirana , Albania Show on map
Originally the state-run Hotel Tirana, the modern incarnation is just as imposing but far more comfortable. It's pretty ugly from the outside, but inside fine artworks decorate the lobby and the carpets are plush and new, although some of the corridors could do with freshening up.This large hotel boasts 140 rooms at present, but once the current renovations are completed there will be 14 more available. The six suites are massive, with substantial living rooms and walk-in wardrobes. Most of the other rooms have either a double or twin single beds, but there are a few triples available. Every room is air-conditioned and has satellite TV, a minibar, direct phone line and Internet connection. All of the standard bathrooms come with a bidet, and some have bathtubs. The impressive view over the busy square will set you back an additional cost per night over the standard rate. The lobby is a free wireless hotspot.

The large white building with the fantastic Socialist Realist mural on the square just across from the hotel is the National Historical Museum. It houses a fascinating collection with exhibits including flints dating back to 100,000 BC. The classical Greek and Roman section is amazing, as is the partisan room. Unfortunately none of the communist-era exhibits have English translations.
